Manual Lymphatic Drainage
CDT and MLD
Combined Decongestive Therapy and Manual Lymph Drainage
What is CDT?
CDT is the combination of MLD, compression therapy (bandages/stockings), skin care and exercise to help in the maintenance and reduction of edemas caused by various conditions.
What is MLD?
MLD is a manual therapy using a variety of light-pressured techniques in a sequential pattern to stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid and aid in the reduction of accumulated fluids in the body.
What is CDT and MLD used to treat?
-Lymphedema
-Lipedema (uneven distribution of fatty tissue)
-CVI (chronic venous insufficiency)
-Acute trauma/injury
-Arthritis
-Headaches/migraines
-Orthopedic conditions
-Sleep disorders
Lymphatic System Information
Definition:
-assists in circulating body fluids and helps defend the body against disease-causing agents
Functions:
-removal of waste material
-immunology
-transport of proteins and other substances
-fluid exchange
Causes for damage to the lymphatic system:
-congenital
-trauma
-radiation
-surgery/surgical complications
-CVI (chronic venous insufficiency)
A compromised lymphatic system can cause the following:
-decreased immune function
-lymphedema
-decreased wound healing
Lymphedema is the swelling of tissues due to an accumulation of protein-rich fluid caused by an insufficiency of the lymphatic system.
